Law Reform Committee Reviews Draft Practice Directions
This afternoon, members of the Law Reform Committee met on Level 7 of the Supreme Court Building in Kampala to review progress on key draft legal instruments.
The meeting was chaired by the Acting Principal Judge, Lady Justice Okuo Jane Kajuga, and brought together members of the Committee to deliberate on ongoing law reform initiatives within the Judiciary.
Lady Justice Kajuga welcomed members and appreciated their continued dedication to strengthening the Judiciary's legal framework. She recalled resolutions from the previous sitting, noting that the Committee had agreed to re-establish sub-committees and assign them specific documents for review and discussion.
She commended the progress made, observing that the sub-committees had already conducted their initial deliberations on the assigned drafts.
During the sitting, the Committee considered two key documents:
- The Constitution (High Court Natural Resources, Energy, Environment and Infrastructure Division) (Practice)Directions, 2025
- The Constitution (Guidelines for Child-Friendly Standards and Procedures) Practice Directions, 2025
Justice Kajuga encouraged members to engage in open and constructive dialogue to ensure that the drafts are comprehensive, practical, and responsive to current judicial needs. The meeting featured detailed presentations and interactive discussions, culminating in a shared understanding of the next steps toward finalizing the documents.
The Law Reform Committee is one of the Judiciary's key technical committees, mandated to review, develop, and harmonize laws, policies, and judicial procedures to ensure consistency, efficiency, and accessibility within the justice system. It plays a vital role in advising on the formulation of Practice Directions, Rules, and Guidelines that enhance the administration of justice in Uganda.
